For over three decades, Fiona Longhurst has cultivated a distinctive visual language grounded in pattern, repetition, and colour. A longstanding artist in the Arts Project Australia studio since 1991, her practice has evolved with quiet persistence, producing a compelling body of work. Her intricate fields of mark-making are animated by recurring motifs – floral forms, delicate compositional arrangements, and text. Through intuitive layering and patterning, Longhurst builds a personal visual lexicon. Co-published by Perimeter Editions and Arts Project Australia, 5 7 3 Float Fall Petals 10 Trees is Longhurst’s first major book, and traces her drawing, painting, and collage work across decades of studio practice. The publication – which takes the form of a workbook – features an essay by Jo Salt and is designed by Narelle Brewer for Perimeter Bureau.

Lithography: Mariska Bijl, robstolk® amsterdamFiona Longhurst (b. 1950) is an established artist whose work is characterised by a considered use of colour, intricate patterning, and layered compositional structures. Often incorporating hand-drawn text, her imagery reflects a dynamic interplay between gesture and control, density and space. Her practice draws affinities with the tradition of automatic drawing, allowing forms to unfold through fluid mark-making and sustained visual exploration. Longhurst has worked at Arts Project Australia since 1991 and presented her first solo exhibition at Arts Projects Australia in 2019. She has participated in numerous national and international group exhibitions including at the Vita Gallery, Oregon, United States in 1995 and at the Centre d’Art Differencié, Liége, Belgium in 1997. In 2021, Fiona collaborated with the iconic Australian fashion label Gorman. Her work is held in the C.O.A Gallery in Montreal, Canada and in private collections throughout Australia.
